Albatross

IMG_0525_edited.jpg

Albatross, created in collaboration with Nick Adelizi, is a powerful 3D print of a body scan of Lina Jane, prepared for copper electroplating. The piece draws inspiration from the literary and symbolic weight of the albatross in Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. In the poem, a mariner kills an albatross, an act that brings about dire consequences. As penance, he is condemned to wear the dead bird around his neck, symbolizing the burden of his transgression.

Similarly, Albatross explores the concept of carrying a symbolic burden. In my case, rather than a literal bird, I bear the scar from my thyroid surgery as if it were an albatross draped around my neck. The scar, a constant reminder of my journey and the loss of my thyroid, becomes a mark of both my struggle and resilience. Albatross represents the weight of this personal history, transforming it into a profound statement on the physical and emotional impact of carrying such a burden and the strength found in confronting and embracing it.
