Between

Between is a photograph taken at Hetch Hetchy in Yosemite, capturing the essence of being caught in a state of uncertainty and ambiguity. The photograph explores the concept of being 'in between,' reflecting the confusion and lack of clarity that surrounded my diagnosis. The title speaks to the liminal space where definitive answers are elusive; it embodies the frustration of hearing, 'We can’t tell you that you have cancer, and we can’t tell you that you don’t have cancer.' This state of not knowing, this space between certainty and uncertainty, is poignantly represented in the photograph, highlighting the challenges of navigating through a diagnosis where the scale and severity of the condition were not fully understood or communicated. 'Between' is a visual representation of the emotional and psychological landscape of living in a space where answers remain out of reach.

How Do I Take My Photographs?

I take my photographs by carefully setting up my camera on a tripod in front of the scene. Using a remote trigger with a timer, I position myself and move into the pose I’ve envisioned. It’s essential for me to be in control of the camera and the shot because this process is about reclaiming my own body and deciding how I am portrayed. Through this method, I ensure that I am represented exactly as I wish, on my own terms.
